04/16/94 Mullins Center, UMASS, Amherst, MA Well, two YEMs in three
nights. I think maybe they wanted to redeem
themselves from 4/14's version as quickly as possible. Or it was requested
by a friend of theirs.. or.. or.. Opening standard.
Vibration of Life discussion during the pre-Nirvana segment. They really
work on it in here, to try to get it to work. And it
seems to. The crowd is NUTS! Nirvana at 3:51. Mike's solo section,
along with the pre-charge and jamming around The Notes
is fine. Nothing unduly exciting, though. "Boy" around 7:09 or so.
My copy has a dropout in the "charge" section. WUDMTF
segment is standard. Brad Sands jumps on the trampolines. You go, Brad..
;-) Another serious dropout/cut on my copy.
Sounds like the jam segment. 11:20 time or so. I dunno. Oh well. Jam
begins quietly, with some delicate noodling from Trey
and Mike and Page (Fish is quiet). At 12:17 or so, Trey teases Santana's
Oye Como Va, briefly. Slowly, steadily, the jam starts
creeping back in intensity. Trey is still noodling delicately in here,
though. Very pretty, nothing exceptional, in my opinion. This is
definitely NOT a below average jam segment; it is just not that much
of an above average one, in my opinion. Trey's soloing is
melodious for the most part, and is engaging, but at times this jam
sounds like it could have been somewhat tricky to really
DANCE to. Just doesn't start raging until very close to the bass and
drums segment, which, by my undoubtedly incorrect timing,
comes in at 15:47 (with sustain from Trey and Page into its opening..
a fantastic transition!). Mike and Fish groove as usual in
here. Very repetitive anti-melodious funk from Mike for the most part.
He does nothing impressive, based on what I've heard
him do. Tis very, very laid back and dry. Fish's accompaniment is good,
and includes some fun tom work, but this whole bass
and drums segment is honestly one of the lamer ones in '94. Final WUDMTF
segment at around 17:30 or so, but again, my
timing is probably off by a good twenty or thirty seconds. Could even
be more, I just don't know. The vocal jam is well,
uneventful imo. I wasn't that pleased with this YEM. Although the jam
segment was interesting, it really wasn't significantly
awesome to redeem this YEM. The highlight had to have been Brad on
the tramps. Total time something around 22:17. Then
Coil kicks in. C rating. two cents KingMoron420
