Just days after my 1st PHISH dub arrived, my wife and I went
to our 1st live PHISH show. At about noon we drove to the
kennel and felt EXTREME GUILT when our Belgian Sheepdog gave
us the most pathetic look as a stranger closed the door on
her run. We jumped back into the van and drove to the TAJ
restaurant to graze on the Indian Buffet and watch a movie in
Hindi (no subtitles). We ate until we swelled up to about
the size of Maureen Reagan (both of us together of course).
Then, it was off to Cincinnati; land of the worst roads on
the planet (possibly only rivaled by the Congo in the rainy
season). We made it to a parking spot within a hundred feet
of the front door to Bogart's thanks to the fine directions
provided by netter Matt Witter. We had about 2-1/2 hrs befor
the doors opened so we started looking around on Vine St. We
decided to stay near the van as it was raining :-(. The
street has a few pubs, a "world clothing" store and a few T-
shirt/misc shops. If you go, don't leave without your
American Express, T-shirts ranged between $25-35 and up. One
bonus was the walk up to the second floor shop called STONE
MOUNTAIN. There was a stairway/hallway monument to
blacklight painted art and posters. Just down the street is
STAGGERLEE'S Carryout- oops...of course this is not meant as
any connection between the Dead and Phish (big wide sloppy
grin!). Later, while walking down the street, we saw a small
group of people with a small reddish dog. We really didn't
think anything about it and kept walking. A couple of blocks
later I heard two of the walking behind us. I only picked up
a little but one said something to the effect that he had
been asked about something that really stands out in his
career. I lost the next few words but then I heard "...You
Enjoy Myself. We really..." and I lost it again as they
passed us. I shot them a look and told my wife that it was a
PHISH song title. We later returned to Bogart's to look at
the picture outside the venue and it turns out that the guy
we heard was Trey. Was the dog Marley? I saw no fountain
activity! We ate down the street at Daniels Pub. The food
was OK but the Samuel Adams was much appreciated :-). We
left and walked around some more. It was in this quirky
little enclave that we found the FIFTH THIRD NATIONAL BANK.
I only had one Sam Adams I SWEAR! We went to Bogart's and
waited for the doors to open. Moments later, a guy on a
skateboard was trying to sell Tye Dies and was yelling "Spare
change for a ticket. and Buy my T-shirts." Hmmm. We
entered Bogart's and not being freaks for GA seating were
sort of disappointed with the layout. A massive dancefloor
in front of the stage with smaller seating areas (2 levels)
located back some distance. Later however, the distance
proved to be a blessing. As for the show well, in a word,
JESUSCHRISTITWASTHESMOKINESTSHOWWEVESEENINALONGTIMEYOW! I
think that about sums up our feelings. I briefly met netter
John Seebach between sets. He had been dancing about 15 feet
from the stage and said it was deafening. I don't know
enough to provide a set list and I'll rely on someone else
for that. The shocker for me was ROCKY TOP as the second
(and final) song in the encore! Can someone tell me what
song was being played when they used trampolines and strobes?
After the show it was good to get out into semifresh air. We
must have been the only two in the whole place that weren't
smoking cigarettes. Hisses to the guy with the cigars! The
show was amazing but the smoke was horrendous! WHEN WILL
THESE GUYS PLAY LOUISVILLE?!?!! Anyway, forget my ramblings,
this is being written at 4:00 a.m. after the show. BTW...I
saw 2 four-tracks and 3 or 4 regular decks at the show.
Would anyone be king enough to trade a copy of the show?

GROUCHO (Quale): Say, where'd I see your face before?
CHICO (Joe): Right where it is now.

Hi Phisherfolk,
Whew! What a show, especially since I was about 5-6 feet from the stage
(my ear's haven't recovered!) The set list is:

I: Golgi Apparatus II: Chalkdust Torture
The Curtain Bouncing Around The Room
   Sparkle All Things Considered Variations
   Stash Foam
   Rift                                 Mike's Song ->
Guelah Papyrus I Am Hydrogen ->
   Divided Sky Weekapaug Groove
I Didn't Know (w/ Fish on Trombone) Silent In The Morning
   It's Ice ->                          Poor Heart
   Glide ->                             Llama
Run Like an Antelope Cold As Ice ->
                                        Honey Love (w/ Vacuum)
E: Contact Cold As Ice
   Rocky Top Squirming Coil
                                        Cavern

Highlights:
-- Before the show I gave Page tapes I made for them: David Byrne,
The Forest w/ Sun Ra Filler, and Robyn Hitchcock, Eye. He said Phish
was into Sun Ra and Trey was psyched for The Forest (it's a baroque
symphony). When I was talking to him, I asked him about the Theme
Songs and he said the Band Football theme song is not the intro to
Horn (even though they're similar) and that since the Crew always
whips thier butts, they made the band's song really powerful and
the crew's really whimpy. He also said that Mike has been
videotaping
thier tour, but that was the first time he got some live footage
(except for the West Coast Brother)
-- You could also hear Fishman practicing the Trombone for I Didn't
Know
      just before the show.
-- The crowd didn't seem to be very into the show in general. My
friends
and I were some of the only people up front really dancing until
then
end of the first set. There were also people along the stage smoking
and blowng thier smoke right into Mike's face. :-(
-- Between the end of Asse Festival and The Fly, they stoped and did
this funky language stuff. I couldn't tell what the signal for this
one thing was but the result was they did all of these funky
gestures
and ended up with thier leg wrapped aroudn thier guitar/bass.
-- Divided sky was a real treat, but to have the Ice -> Glide -> an
      amazing, mind-melting, demon-exorcising,I-didn't-know-if-I-would-
be-alive-in-the-end Antelope was a true gift. Yes, a song with the
lyrics "You've got to run like an antelope" can be a spiritual
      experience.
-- Second set was much more tame and quick paced, except for a ripping
Mike's Hydro Groove. I still can't figure out how the band made the
ubiquitous piercing music they did during the Mike's Song Climax.
During Hydrogen Trey and Mike did this little slow motion ballet
together, ending up laying on thier backs, on the floor, doing a
      ballet with thier feet.
-- Page really went to town in his Poor Heart jam... never thought I
would see this as an intense song, but hey...
-- During Rocky Top, I got a really kick out of watching the humongous
      security guard gettin' down.

And now I must wait at least until the summer, possibly fall. Life without
live Phish...
